DJT, Vance, Musk and company have been in the ultimate seats of power for a month.

After quitting social media in 2021, I dipped back in as one of a dozen million people who joined the open source social media app BlueSky after the election.

Can you say “dozen million?” – sounds funny because of the end alliteration. Well, 12 million people.

BlueSky went from 12 million to 24 million users in my first month on the site, November 24th to December 24th. It has slightly more than 31 million users now.

In my three months using it, I learned it was a sanctuary space before I joined: a creative space and safe space for people of all types. I learned that its open source construction led to a collective creation of tools that allow for better, more nuanced blocking, muting and white/blacklisting. It’s a positive community of well-grouped threads and feeds. I really like it there. sweet.

I don’t belong, but that’s not BlueSky’s fault.

I don’t belong on X/Twitter, FB, IG, TikTok, or any other social media.

My experience on BlueSky these past three months merely confirmed it.

I’ve never had a Facebook account, and was on Twitter, pre-Musk, for exactly ten years (from April 4, 2011 to April 4, 2021). I have an Instagram account for Giants Baseball Corner, but I’ve never used it.

I told myself I was participating in Twitter to observe the pulse of the community, nation and eventually world. I joined in 2011, year of the “Arab Spring,” in which Twitter played such a predominant role.

But ultimately I found it to be a distraction I no longer wish to engage in. So, I stopped posting after ten years. Then Elon bought it.

When Twitter was fresh it was cool. But it’s well and truly rotten now. Muskified.

I sought that feeling of fresh Twitter when I joined BlueSky and it has that, but with 31 million users, it is an exponentially smaller community than X, and users are mostly in the United States – Japan, England, maybe.

By contrast, X has 600 million users around the world.

When you make a noise there, it’s a wake wave on a lake, as opposed to the shared laughs we have in our pond of ripples on BlueSky.

my skircle

Because most people have an X/Twitter experience in their rear-view mirror, the composition of the BlueSky community comes with a built-in cultural protection. If I am posting there, I’m consciously trying not to spoil it. I find myself tempered knowing the community is sane.

But I realized that, having been off social media (or socials, as they’re now called), I just don’t know how to communicate properly on them. Instead, I overshare precious material, like and repost my echo chamber’s stuff and only once in a while find valuable reading material.

And it’s a huge time suck. No, I’ll stick with blogging thanks very much.

It’s late February and this is my first post of the year because I’ve been traveling, and in studio making art and contemplating what I am going to participate in.

At the moment, I am in studio working on oil painting, large collage pieces and starting to write again.

I expect I need to isolate even more to do some of this stuff, and I can.

so …

see ya when I see ya

I quit socials in 2021. I was on Twitter for exactly ten years: as MTKsf from April.4, 2011 to April 4, 2021.

I have started BlueSky as of November 24, 2024.

The first great blue heron, Ardea herodias, I’ve ever seen at the field and stream visited this past December, 2016.

It never let me get close enough to get good footage, but its immense blue wings are clearly visible.

the footage from the first visit is even worse, but it was exciting to see this guy.

In Melky Cabrera’s first game back at AT&T Park he received boos and catcalls, but still hit well.

However, the day belonged to Tim Lincecum, Andres Torres and Sergio Romo as the Giants won 2-1 on seven strong innings from Timmy, a great 8th by Affeldt and a good save by Romo. Torres’ 2-run homer that continued his ownage of Johnson was the game winner.

Giants 2, Blue Jays 1

In Game Two, Cy Young Award-winning knuckleballer R.A. Dickey mowed down the Giants and Barry Zito gave up 8 hits and 4 runs, but didn’t look too bad. The story was Dickey, who was nearly unhittable and in command.

Series Recap – Giants Shat On by Blue Jays (0-2)

The Giants traveled to Toronto for two games and upon arrival Bruce Bochy gave Melky Cabrera his World Series ring. Fans discussed whether he “deserved” it or not – which bugged me.

Melky became a new father in June of 2012 while with the Giants, but he knew his baby girl was coming in the winter when, worried about how he was going to raise a child after not batting well the previous year, he signed with San Francisco.

Under personal and professional pressure to perform, Melky Cabrera made the very common and all-too-easy mistake of turning to PED’s. It’s understandable; a shame he chose to hide things from people and to behave badly when discovered, but, still I understand why he did it and I thank him for his contributions to the Giants on the field.

The man was the hottest hitting player in baseball, vigorously helped us win the division and was MVP of an All-Star Game that gave us home field advantage against the Tigers in the World Series. Then he tested positive for PED’s.

I think it unkind to berate, disparage and want to punish him by saying he shouldn’t get a ring when previously fans dressed like milkmen and milkmaids in support of him. It takes a lot more than PED’s to hit the way he did. It takes skills – and Melky has them.

As we say goodbye to Canada I say to the diminishing figure of Melky Cabrera in our rear-view mirror, “Thanks, Melk, sorry we couldn’t have you on the World Series team, but feel proud of your ring, we might not have them without you.”

Meanwhile, his team, the Toronto Blue Jays, with the worst record in all baseball and turf instead of grass, destroyed the Giants, who bumbled like idiots in the field, whiffed at the plate and gave up 21 runs in two games.

The Giants lost 10-6 and 11-3 and neither game was ever close.

Ryan Vogelsong had another terrible outing. We should change the order and return to Cain, Bumgarner, Vogey, Zito, Lincecum. This would also be an alternating right-left-right-left-right order. I think it would help Vogey, who is so strict about habits he eats the same thing everyday before a game.

Everybody wants to put Canada behind us after that ugly couple of days. We had a freshly washed ride after the Braves series and this flock of Blue Jays came along and shat all over it. There was a funny line from a fan: “Yeah, but those were Canadian runs – I’m pretty sure with the exchange rate we split the series.” Ha!
