I got on a plane in Texas and after 22 hours got off a plane in Uruguay, and discovered that while I was onboard the flight, Dolly Parton, 80, and Ruben Rada, 83, died. Both were enormous figures of folk music in their respective countries – the ones way down there next to each other in an alphabetical list, the United States and Uruguay.

I woke up, bleary-eyed as we landed in Montevideo early on the 26th of August, put up the shade, and caught this incredible view of the Rio Santa Lucia at dawn, an image I dedicate to Dolly and Ruben:

There’s much to say and tell, but it is the last morning and I want this up so I can edit by phone when I am on the planes going back to the Northern Hemisphere.
